Snap to Grid Modifier

Modifiers affect the way drawing, moving and editing actions behave. When an action is modified it is carried out in relation to something else.

Snap to GridThe Snap to Grid modifier ensures that all drawing, editing and moving actions are performed relative to the grid. When this button is checked all your actions will snap to the grid points, and at set points between them, depending on the Grid settings in the Document Properties Grid.

With this button checked you will see that drawing actions and objects being moved jump from snappoint to snappoint to indicate what their exact position will be when you release the mouse button.

Snapping to the grid is very useful when you want to create a drawing with accurately located objects.  It is strongly recommended, when working in Block Schematic, Rack Layout and Pictorial Schematic drawings, that Snap to Grid should always be on, particularly when inserting symbols.  To turn Snap to Grid off will make it nearly impossible to align symbols and use other tools, like the Cable tool, effectively and neatly.

If you need finer resolution in your snapping, e.g. if you want to snap between gridpoints, change the Number of Snaps values in the Properties Grid of your drawing.

You can toggle Snap to Grid using the FastKey F5 - this applies even in the middle of drawing and editing actions.
