When multiple objects are selected they are repositioned
relative to the last selected object, which does not move. The Align Selected
Objects dialog shown here has more fields than the Align to Grid dialog

In this example the horizontal centrepoint of each of the first selected objects would align to the centre the last selected object which does not move.

When using the Align tool it is normally a good idea to drag a selection rectangle around the objects you want to move, then hold down the Shift key and click once on the object you want to align them to. It is the Last selected object that remains stationary.
