When you choose to paste a Rectangular Array you will see the dialog shown here.
Offset defines the distance from a point on the original object to the same point on the next object in the array. The default values in the Offset boxes are the overall width and height of the visible objects in the selection being arrayed. Default document settings mean that positive values in the X and Y offset boxes create an array that stretches right and down. Negative values in X create copies to the left of the original and negative values in Y create copies above the original. To increase the spacing between the objects in the array just increase the X and Y offset values.
The spin controls in the offset boxes, when clicked, will increase or decrease the offset value by the overall width (X) or height (Y) of the visible objects in the selection being arrayed.
Number in Array determines the total number of instances in the array, including the original that is being copied. The number of columns in the array is defined by the X value, the number of rows by Y. To create a single column of objects set the X value to 1, or to create a single row set the Y value to 1. An array must be more than 1x1.
