Stardraw A/V Lite is a multi-layer drawing application. You can imagine the layers to be like the transparent cels used by animators to create a frame of a traditional animated cartoon; by drawing the background of a scene on one cel, the foreground on another and each character in the animation on another, you can lay the cels on top of each other and the full picture is created. Stardraw A/V Lite follows exactly the same principle.
There is no limit to the number of layers you can have in any document and each layer has its own unique name. A layer can be displayed or hidden, reported on or ignored, printed or not printed, locked or editable. All of these characteristics are controlled using the Layers Tab in the Document Properties Dialog, shown here.
The dropdown box defines the current layer - this is the layer on which all new objects are placed. The current layer name is always displayed in the Status Bar of the main application window.
The list box shows all layers in the document and their states. To create new layers simply click on the “Create” button and type in the layer’s name when asked. To delete layers, select the layer name and click on the “Delete” button. When a layer is deleted all of the objects on that layer will be deleted too.
Each layer name will have up to 4 letters by it which mirror the status of the dialog checkboxes for that layer. “D” means the layer is currently being displayed, “P” means it will be printed, “R” means that its contents will form part of the report, “L” means that the layer is locked and cannot be edited. If a layer is locked none of the drawing or editing tools or commands will be available.
